Havasupai hike #4... COMPLETE.
Thursday we left right after I got off work. We arrived at the rim around 8:30 or so, and started hiking shortly thereafter. We hiked all the way to the where the river starts (probably 8 miles) and slept there for the night. It definitely wasn't very comfortable, and I bruised my hip a bit from laying on the hard ground, but it was better than waking up super early and hiking the whole thing all in one day! I wasn't even very sore--just a bit tired from sleeping maybe an hour of the 5 we allotted ourselves for the night... ha
Friday morning we got up at the first sight of sunlight and hiked to the village to pay, then to the campsite. Only 2 miles that day :) We took a nap, and then went down to Mooney falls. It had been a while since I'd gone down there, last year it was too crowded so we couldn't. IT WAS SO FUN! It felt so nice, so cool, and the mist felt amazing! We wandered down the river, down a couple waterfalls, and had super fun :) The only hard part, was us walking so far down, having to go against the current on the way back. I got a few bruises on my leg from trampling over rocky waterfalls. We also hung out at Havasupai falls later that afternoon. At night, we played Rat Crew (the card game) and oh my goodness that was fun :) It lasted a couple hours, until Porter D finally won it all. Then, we went to sleep.
Saturday, we got up, started packing our bags to hike out later that night, and took the morning pretty easy. Then, we went to Havasupai falls again. Where I managed to sunburn my shoulders, knees, and ankles (yes, ankles, don't know how that was possible with them IN the water the whole time... ha). Then we went to the new waterfall after the flood a few years back, Lil Navajo or Emerald Falls (depending on what you want to call it). That one was pretty fun, all the kids were jumping off the top of the falls, probably 25 feet high. I didn't though.. I could NEVER!! Heights are not my favorite thing ;) Most the kids jumped off, until the police came by and said we couldn't because we signed a waiver (apparently?) saying we wouldn't. She had a lady with her on her quad that broke her ankle needing an escort out, and if we didn't stop we would have to be escorted out immediately. But hey, if you ask me, we were headed out anyways..and if we got to ride the quad..that'd be a better bet ;) ha. Next, we walked to the village to eat dinner. We were told after 15 minutes our food would be ready... over 45 minutes later, it finally was done. Seriously, how long does it take to make Indian Fry Bread and Chili Cheese fries??? I could have made it all from scratch faster than that.. ha :) Right after, we started the trek out. We were cruising pretty fast, probably 3 miles an hour or so, and from the village to the base of the switch backs took us like 2 hours. I enjoyed listening to the 20 minute condensed version of Porter D's 4 hour long joke. Listened to my iPod a bit. And just walked and thought. I love how quiet it is out there, it's nice to just get some things in your head sorted out. There was even a bat that wouldn't leave me alone.. musta liked me ;) By that time though, my sunburn was RAGING, the arch of my foot was hurting, and if I stopped, it took quite a bit of energy to get going again. But I was so super tired, I had to energy to even start. Finally, after a 30 minute break (ha) we started the dreaded switchbacks. Originally, our goal was 10:30, but after the long breaks, we changed it to 11. I got out at 11:07, so BARELY missed my goal. But ya know? I don't even really care, I'm just glad I made it out!! I was welcomed to the top by Porter and Caleb giving me a "victory arch" cheering me on ;) it was actually quite nice! We finally left around 11:45 ish, drove to Seligman, took a 2 hour power nap so my dad and Cal wouldn't fall asleep while driving. Finally arrived home at 6:30 this morning... showered, slept, and went to church!
I'm honestly not as sore as I thought I would be. My shoulders need stretched out, but my sunburn hurts too bad. The arch of my foot still hurts, and my hips and knee joints a little bit. But other than that, I'm fine!! :D
This trip was SUPER fun! I love Havasupai so much, but I think it may have to be a few years before we do it again.. :) Thanks to Daddy for takin all of us! And Bryndee, Porter, Cal, Kayla, and Colton for joining us!
Quotes from the trip:
Caleb: that's sexist
Garrett: like girls being the president..
Caleb: No, girls CAN be president.....just no one votes for them.
Garrett: hey dad, a little while ago, I found this underwear on the ground. Is it any of ours?
Jet: Hey Doggie!!
Wyatt: No, Jet. That's a hyena...
